National Sample Survey
A brief note about the NSS Section, its functions and responsibilities

The Directorate of Economics and Statistics, Meghalaya, Shillong the Nodal Agency of the State Statistical System with the responsibility of collecting, processing and dissemination of Socio- Economic data and information which will utilize as Economic and Statistical inputs during the process of planning and governance by the Government machineries. NSS Section is one of the important sections of the Directorate of Economics and Statistics, responsible for conducting Socio- Economic data on National Sample Survey of various NSSO survey programmes in the State. The NSS survey programme is being implemented by the Directorate on a regular basis w.e.f. the 27th Round (1972-73). Since then, it has become a normal regular work programme to conduct NSS survey of various subjects in the state by adopting the guidelines, procedures and methodology as laid down by the Ministry of Statistics & Programme Implementation, Govt. of India. The directorate technically aligned and functioned in close co-ordination with the NSSO during the conduct of field works and data processing. The Section, in addition to its normal work programme, it has also been entrusted with responsibility of organizing and conducting other subjects of central surveys like Employment Unemployment survey now known as Periodic Labour Force survey and other adhoc surveys of different subjects such as Birth and Mortality Survey, Family Budget survey, etc as required by the state Government from time to time.

An outline on the past and current activities of the Section

The Directorate of Economics & Statistics, Meghalaya has participated for the first time in NSS survey in 1972, since then, it has participated 52 times of NSS rounds till this present 79th Round 2022.

At present, the Section is engaging with Socio Economic survey of NSS 79th Round which was started from July 2022 till June 2023.

The subjects coverage of this Round are:-
  1. Comprehensive Annual Modular Survey (CAMS)
  2. Survey on AYUSH
Survey Period:-

The 79th Round survey commenced from July 2022 and it will be of one year duration. CAMS and AYUSH will be carried out simultaneously in same FSU but in different households. For the first time in the history of DES, Meghalaya, that survey was conducted not in Paper Schedules but in Tablet (CAPI).

Objective of the Survey:-

1. Comprehensive Annual Modular Survey (CAMS) is introduced and designed to collect information required to generate some important Socio-Economic indicators that are not available from any other source like administrative data, etc. This survey will also provide information required for the purpose of monitoring the performances, of SDGs indicators. This survey will be annual in which some of the modules may be repeated annually and some periodically with more than one year periodicity.

From this survey, the following indicators will be able to generate :-

2. Survey on AYUSH :- The survey on AYUSH will be the first ever All India survey of its kind. The main objective of this survey is to get an idea about the awareness and penetration of AYUSH system of medicine in Indian population or in other words to gather information for development of various key parameters on AYUSH. In NSS 68th round, 2011-12, an attempt was made in the survey of Household Consumer Expenditure, to get some estimates on awareness and uses of AYUSH system of medicine by the household. Information on AYUSH medicines used by the patients for in-patient and out-patient treatments and by the pregnant women for pre-natal and post-natal care was also collected in the survey of Household Social Consumption: Health, NSS 75th round, 2017-18. BUT no dedicated and comprehensive nation-wide survey on AYUSH sector has been conducted in any NSS household surveys till date except this 79th Round survey.

This survey will gather information for development of the following indicators:-

Side by side with the 79th round, the Section is also engage in tabulation report of 75th round. Validation of 76th round also was still going on, where as regarding 77th round, validation software has not yet been received from the Ministry.
